What is it about?
We finally reached aliens! Oh yeah! Unfortunately, we reached them with old arcade games and somehow they interpreted that as an act of war.It sounds funny, but I’m pretty sure we started many wars with each other based on far more ridiculous reasons.
So now the aliens attacked the Earth with weapons based on classic arcades, pixelating the shit out of us. The aliens were merciful enough, though to give us a fighting chance. If we manage to win against their evil video games, they will leave us alone. Luckily for our planet, Brenner (Adam Sandler), a decorated arcade games veteran, is here to kick butt in “Pac-Man”, “Donkey-Kong” and other classics.
Who should watch it?
Should I watch it with my kid(s)?
Well… “Pixels” does have some foul language and people dying, although, they get pixelated so it’s not as traumatic as the usual act of dying. But it might be too much for very young children. It could be suitable for older kids, if for no other reason than to show them how games used to look like way before they were born.
Is it good to watch on a date?
Yes, especially if you are both old enough to remember the games in the movie.
For what audience is it intended?
For Adam Sandler’s fans and for everyone who want to reminisce about the glory days of arcade games. So basically, for an older audience.
What can I expect from this movie?
Will I fall off the couch laughing and have sore abs the next day due to laughing too hard?
I doubt it. “Pixels” does have a couple of funny scenes, but nothing hysterical.
Is my brain going to implode trying to figure out the movie?
No. It might get pixelated, though.
Will I learn anything from this movie?
Yes. American soldiers don’t have the necessary training or the hand-eye coordination needed to successfully play arcade games from the 80’s. None of the drills cover that.
Is it based on something?
Is this movie a must-see?
Similar movies like “Pixels”?
To be recommended.
“Pixels” got together a pretty sweet cast. You got Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Josh Gad, and, as a cherry on the top, you get to see Peter Dinklage with a mullet! How awesome is that? It’s mighty cool of him to join the movie, because, let’s face it, ever since the “Game of Thrones” he has been a major star and probably could’ve done without “Pixels”, especially since he had to be aware, just like everybody else, that “Pixels” won’t be received too warmly and won’t do well financially speaking.
Even though this is a typical Adam Sandler movie, with a far-fetched script (Kevin James as the President? Fuck me…) and over-the-top humor, “Pixels” could make you sentimental, just like they made me, and make you ignore its many, many flaws. It’s a true homage to classic arcade games and it was mostly fun to watch it.
