The Survivalist (2015): Minimalistic and beautiful

What is it about?

Our hero Survivalist (we never get to find out his real name), is living alone in a small hut. Not so living, as surviving. He spends his whole time trying to grow enough food for him to survive.

We never learn what happened, but it seems that some kind of an apocalypse happened. The only thing we know for sure is that everyone is hungry and would kill you for a piece of bread. Not an easy world to live in, but our Survivalist did a pretty decent job.

But then, two women find his farm and you just know that there will be trouble. They are starving and would do anything for a meal, including sex. So even though Survivalist knows they’re trouble, his penis took over and he and the younger of two women started having regular sex in exchange for a meal.

There was only one problem with this arrangement; Survivalist’s farm offered enough food for only one person, maybe two. But definitely not for three. Who will survive, if anyone?

Who should watch it?

  • Should I watch it with my kid(s)?

No. There’s nudity, sex for meals, and violence.

  • Is it good to watch on a date?

    It wouldn’t choose it.

  • For what audience is it intended?

For anyone who likes a “survival” genre where one character or a group of characters is trying to survive but someone or something is making that hard for them.

What can I expect from this movie?

  • Will I fall off the couch laughing and have sore abs the next day due to laughing too hard?

    No.

  • Is my brain going to implode trying to figure out the movie?

    I hope not.

  • Will I learn anything from this movie?

Yes. Even in a situation when everyone is hungry and every stranger wants to kill you, you will do just fine if you live alone. As soon as you get in contact with women, you’re fucked. And not in a good way.

  • Is it based on something?

    No.

  • Is this movie a must-see?

It’s not bad, but it’s not something you absolutely need to see, either.

Similar movies like “The Survivalist”?

You can try with “The Road”, “The Book of Eli”, and “Children of Men”.

Judgment time!

“The Survivalist” is one of those movies you won’t hear about on TV and you probably won’t be able to watch it in a movie theater, which is a shame, as this one hell of a movie. There are very few characters, and not much of a background is provided, so there are some unanswered questions, but it’s so pleasant to watch it and enjoy the atmosphere.

It’s a perfect example of what can be done with a budget of only £1 million. Some much more expensive movies could learn a lot from “The Survivalist”. You won’t see any fancy CGI or explosions or anything Hollywood-like, but you will see some great acting and a beautiful cinematography. I give it 8/10.
