The Nice Guys (2016): I would hire them!

What is it about?

Jackson Healy (Russell Crowe) is a private detective and he is as tough as they come. He’ll snap your arm just like that. That’s what happens to another private detective, Holland March (Ryan Gosling), early in the movie. After that, they become good friends. Only in Hollywood, right?

Now they have to unravel a case that is much bigger than they thought. The deeper they dig, the more shit they uncover. You got porn stars, dirty politicians, goon squads…It’s like real life, actually, but in the 1970’s.

As the encounter all sorts of weird motherfuckers, people get killed and funny situations happen. Sometimes, both at the same time.

Who should watch it?

  • Should I watch it with my kid(s)?

No. The movie is full of violence, foul language, and horrible haircuts.

  • Is it good to watch on a date?

Yes. This type of movie is perfect for dates. It’s witty and entertaining, with plenty of action to keep you both awake.

  • For what audience is it intended?

For anyone who likes action comedies packed with humor and violence.

What can I expect from this movie?

  • Will I fall off the couch laughing and have sore abs the next day due to laughing too hard?

It’s not a hysterical comedy, but it certainly has its moments. I laughed more than once. Although, I have to warn you that some jokes are rather raw, so it’s not for everyone’s taste.

  • Is my brain going to implode trying to figure out the movie?

    No.

  • Will I learn anything from this movie?

Yes. 1970’s were pretty fucking weird.

  • Is it based on something?

    No.

Similar movies like “The Nice Guys”?

“2 Guns”, “Ride Along 1 & 2”, “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.”, and “R.I.P.D”.

Judgment time!

This is a typical “two guys get together, say funny things, and kill some bastards”. But guess what? It fucking works! Sure, the script is nothing original, but the execution is pretty sweet. Russell Crowe as a fat, tough motherfucker and Ryan Gosling as a divorced douchebag with a kid work well together, while Angourie Rice is awesome at playing her role of Gosling’s daughter. She will grow to be a fine actress.

Sure, the movie is not perfect, but then again, no movie is. Some of the jokes might be too crude for some people, but they worked for me and from what I’ve seen on forums, for lots of other people as well. So you got two fantastic actors, great humor, and fast-paced action, which is good enough for me. I give this movie 8/10.
