What is it about?
Brüno is a popular gay fashion expert in Austria and has its own TV show that’s very popular. After he embarrasses himself in front of his fans, his career is ruined. Even his tiny lover doesn’t want to have anything with him. The only one that stays with him is his faithful assistant, Lutz.
Together, they travel to the US to find fame, fortune, and maybe even true love. Along the way, they meet lots of homophobes, make Paula Abdul treat people like furniture, and get themselves in lots of uber-gay situations.
Who should watch it?
Should I watch it with my kid(s)?
Fuck no. This movie is the very opposite of something you should let your kid watch. Seriously, if you don’t want to scare him for life, keep him the fuck away from this movie. Sure, he might learn that gay is okay, which is a good thing, but he’ll also see a couple of dicks (as in, penises) and a myriad of scenes that will scar him for life.
Is it good to watch on a date?
Yes. Especially if you are gay, so you and your partner can laugh at Cohen’s ridiculous depiction of gays and point out his mistakes. If you are not gay, (and in that case, I hope your date’s not gay, either) it will still be a great movie for dates, but only if you love Cohen’s fucked up humor.
For what age and gender is it intended?
From anyone older than 18. The only adults who should not see this movie are nuns and homophobes. They’d probably have a stroke.
What can I expect from this movie?
Will I fall off the couch laughing and have sore abs the next day due to laughing too hard?
If you like other Cohen’s movies, you’ll find this movie funny as well.
Is my brain going to implode trying to figure out the movie?
Will I learn anything from this movie?
Yes. If you adopt a black child, don’t name him O.J. It just won’t be received well. Oh, and, Harrison Ford telling you to fuck off doesn’t count as an interview.
Is it based on something?
Is this movie a must-see?
Only if you are a Cohen’s fan.
Similar movies like “Brüno”?
For me, it wasn’t as good as “Borat”, but it was pretty funny. Just like in “Borat”, Cohen pushed the limits of good taste. When watching “Brüno”, nothing is off the table. You won’t believe the scenes in this movie until you see them. Just like with “Borat”, Cohen raised lots of controversy with this movie. It’s not the greatest movie of all times, but it seems that Cohen is not into making such films, anyway, so it’s okay.
I give it 7/10.
