Borat (2006): One of the greatest comedies of the 21st century!

What is it about?

Borat (Sacha Baron Cohen) is a reporter from Kazakhstan and one of the most popular people in the country. Even though he talks and looks like an idiot. His government sends him to America to learn their customs and way of life. Along the way, he falls in love with Pamela Anderson and his priorities are now to locate her and make her his wife. While trying to find Pamela, Borat gets in all sorts of troubles and hilarious situations.

Who should watch it?

  • Should I watch it with my kid(s)?

No! This movie is full of foul language, misogyny, and all sorts of shit that’s beyond weird. Don’t get me wrong, it’s funny as hell, but not something a kid should watch.

  • Is it good to watch on a date?

I believe it is. It’s hilarious and entertaining. As long as you declare your utter disgust every time something misogynist happens in the movie, everything will be fine. That is if you are a guy. If you’re a girl it’s totally okay if you are not shocked by Borat. But if you’re a guy, you better prepare your “I am shocked and appalled” face if you still want to have a girlfriend.

  • For what age and gender is it intended?

Pretty much for everyone older than 16 and especially for people who like Sacha Baron Cohen’s type of humor.

What can I expect from this movie?

  • Will I fall off the couch laughing and have sore abs the next day due to laughing too hard?

It’s possible. But know that Cohen’s humor is not for everyone as for a lot of people, some scenes are way too fucked up.

  • Is my brain going to implode trying to figure out the movie?

The only hard part is to try and figure out what situations are scripted and what aren’t. It seems that most if it is not scripted, which gives this movie even more value.

  • Will I learn anything from this movie?

Yes. Never invite Borat into your home. If you do, don’t let him use the bathroom because he will get back with a bag of his own shit and give it to you.

  • Is it based on something?

No.

Yes! It’s a comedy like no other.

Similar movies like “Borat”?

You can try with Brüno or any other Cohen’s movies. Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping is also a good recommendation

Judgment time!

The title is actually “Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan” but I didn’t feel like writing the whole thing because I am lazy. Although, now I realize that I wrote it anyway, which means that I am not lazy enough. There’s still room for improvement.

Anyway, Borat sort of revolutionized comedy as it introduced us to comedy concepts that were unbelievable and never seen before. Combining real-life people who had no idea they will be in a movie with some staged situations is pure genius. Sure, it’s not the most moral thing to do, but fuck it, art knows no boundaries. Sacha Baron Cohen got sued by several people he used in his movie, but it seems that almost all of the charges were dropped or settled.

All in all, “Borat” was a real game changer at the time (in 2006) and as such should be seen by everyone. I give it 9/10.
