He Never Died (2015): Wonderfully weird

What is it about?

Jack spends most of his days in a dark, shabby room, lying in bed and staring at a wall. Naturally, I immediately assumed he’s either a pothead or a college student who turned gray and aged horribly due to stress. It turns out, it’s neither. As the story develops, we find out he is much more than just an apathetic waste of life. Trust me, you’ll be surprised.

Who should watch it?

  • Should I watch it with my kid(s)?

No! This movie is filled with blood and broken bones. When it comes to violence, it’s not subtle at all.

  • Is it good to watch on a date?

It’s a mix of comedy, horror and weirdness. For my girlfriend and me, it was pretty entertaining to watch. So if you both like unconventional movies, it just might be a good choice for you.

  • For what age and gender is it intended?

Mostly for adults.

What can I expect from this movie?

  • Will I get scared?

Even though it’s partly horror, this movie is not scary nor does it intend to be scary. It’s gory, but not scary.

  • Will I fall off the couch laughing and have sore abs the next day due to laughing too hard?

Henry Rollins’ performance should make you chuckle several times. In a good way. His apathetic face and voice combined with violence and mayhem are hilarious.

  • Is my brain going to implode trying to figure out the movie?

The plot is pretty easy to follow, but the main character’s background remained foggy and almost nothing is explained. If you try to figure out every single detail of this movie, then yes, your brain just might implode, leaving your family sad and devastated. Unless you’re an asshole. In that case, they might not be so devastated.

  • Will I learn anything from this movie?

Yeah. When you shoot a guy in the head and he doesn’t even flinch, don’t stand there in disbelief trying to shoot him again. It means that he is immortal, and what you should do, is to get the fuck away from him and run like your girlfriend just told you she’s pregnant. You can scream if you like. Nobody will hold it against you.

  • Is it based on something?

Not that I know of.

It’s a decent movie, but not a must see.

Judgment time!

“He Never Died” is one of the weirdest movies I ever saw. You can notice right away that it’s low-budget, but that doesn’t mean it’s bad. Quite the opposite. It manages to be funny and mysterious at the same time. At first, I thought that Henry Rollin’s acting is bad, because his face was pretty rigid and his voice so indifferent. But as the movie progressed, it was more and more funny, so I’m guessing it was on purpose.

Lots of people said this would be better as a series, since Jack’s past is so rich and eventful, but I feel it’s better to leave it cryptic and puzzling. And who knows, maybe there will be a sequel that will further develop the main character. All in all, it was a pretty entertaining movie and I give it 7/10.
