Straight Outta Compton (2015): The origin of rap

What is it about?

“Straight Outta Compton” is a biographical movie about the beginning of rap music. Dr. Dre, Snoop Dog, Easy-E, Ice Cube…They are all here. Their beginnings in the music industry are intertwined with crime, discrimination by the police, and lots of drugs.

The main character is Dr. Dre, without whom the rap music we know today probably wouldn’t exist.

Who should watch it?

  • Should I watch it with my kid(s)?

No. This movie, as great as it is, is filled with curse words, offensive slurs of all sorts and of course, violence. You can’t have gangsta rap without all that. You just can’t. Oh, and if you do let your kid watch it, he/she might start singing “Fuck the Police”.

  • Is it good to watch on a date?

Only if you are both into rap music. The movie is almost two and a half hours long. So if one of you don’t like this type of movies, you’ll die.

  • Who should watch it?

Everyone who likes rap music, wants to learn about the origins of rap music, and likes movies with lots of rap songs and violence.

What can I expect from this movie?

  • Will I fall off the couch laughing and have sore abs the next day due to laughing too hard?

Not really. The movie is about the birth of rap. Nothing funny about that.

  • Is my brain going to implode trying to figure out the movie?

No.

  • Will I learn anything from this movie?

Yes. Don’t ever let Paul Giamatti be your manager. He will fuck you over.

  • Is it based on something?

It’s based on real events that took place in the 80’s and in the 90’s.

It’s a must see if you like rap music.

Judgment time!

I am not a rap fan and I don’t know much about its origin but I really liked “Straight Outta Compton.” It was cool to see how some of the stars became what they are today. The atmosphere and the vibe of those days were presented very well. Even though it’s rather long, this movie was never boring.

However, being co-produced by Dr.Dre, “Straight Outta Compton” feels biased and you get a feeling that only Dr.Dre and Ice Cube were decent people while everyone else is borderline crazy, irresponsible or a back-stabber. Whether it really was like that, I don’t know, but judging from the reactions, it seems that “Straight Outta Compton” is not as genuine as it could have been. That’s why I give it 7/10.
