What is it about?
During a military coup in Chile in 1973., a young and foolish activist gets caught by Pinochet’s army and ends up in an infamous sect ruled by a deranged pedophile. His girlfriend Lena loves him so much, she decides to join the sect just so she could save him. Isn’t that adorable?
But life in “Colonia Dignidad” is everything but pleasant. Women are treated like cattle, while men are eager for an opportunity to kick the living shit out of them. You know, just like the 19th century. Of course, there is always that one woman who is a major cunt, beating and insulting all other women.
Lena realizes that escaping from “Colonia Dignidad” will be extremely difficult, and the plot thickens…
Who should watch it?
Should I watch it with my kid(s)?
No. It’s a “heavy” movie with lots of violence and unpleasant scenes.
Is it good to watch on a date?
No. It’s a depressive, grim movie and as such is not suitable for cuddling on the couch.
Who should watch it?
Everyone who is thinking of joining some fucked up sect because they can’t deal with real life and don’t know what to do with their freedom and ability to choose their destiniy. After watching this movie, they might reconsider.
What can I expect from this movie?
Will I fall off the couch laughing and have sore abs the next day due to laughing too hard?
No. There is literally not a single scene or line remotely funny.
Is my brain going to implode trying to figure out the movie?
- Will I learn anything from this movie?
Don’t join a sect and don’t take pictures of soldiers who are killing people in the middle of the streets. They will beat you to a pulp and take you to a sect you don’t want to join. It’s common sense, really.
Is it based on something?
Yeah. It’s based on a true story. That horrible sect actually existed and only 5 people were able to escape it. Ever.
Is this movie a must-see?
It’s a good movie, but not a must-see.
Similar movies like “The Colony”?
To be recommended.
“The Colony” (or “Colonia”) tells a shocking story of an abominable sect that ruined the lives of hundreds of people. Its leader was a maniacal psycho with delusions of grandeur. He was a god while everyone else was his servant. Acts he committed are heinous and beyond anything forgivable.
“The Colony” depicts it well and we really get to see what was life in this sect although it fails to mention why the hell would anyone want to join it on their own. There is literally nothing appealing in living a life in “Colonia Dignidad”. It’s not clear what has the leader promised to his flock and with what did he attract them. I give this movie 7/10.
