Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping (2016): One of the funniest movies this year!

What is it about?

Directed as a mockumentary, “Popstar” is a hilarious comedy about the band “The Style Boyz”. They are ultra popular and everybody loves them. But, as it usually happens, they fall apart at one point.

Connor starts performing solo with Owen as his DJ (who’s only equipment is an iPod with pre-recorded music) while the third member of “The Style Boyz” becomes a – farmer! As in, collecting cow shit and all that.

As Connors popularity starts to plummet, he becomes more and more desperate to stay at the top…

Who should watch it?

• Should I watch it with my kid(s)?

Well…Not really. There are several inappropriate scenes that are not exactly suited for kids.

• Is it good to watch on a date?

Yeah, I would recommend it as a date movie. With any luck, maybe you’ll get to sing “I Just Had Sex” from “Lonely Island” whose members are, by the way, three main characters in the movie.

• For what age and gender is it intended?

For younger adults and especially for fans of “Lonely Island”. If you like “Lonely Island” like I do, you will definitely like this movie as well.

 What can I expect from this movie?

• Will I fall off the couch laughing and have sore abs the next day due to laughing too hard?

If you like the sense of humor that “Lonely Island” shows in their spots, this movie will definitely make you laugh. Although some of the jokes are plain ridiculous and over the top, most of the movie is pretty funny.

• Is my brain going to implode trying to figure out the movie?

No. It’s a rather simple movie. Minimum brain activity required.

• Will I learn anything from this movie?

Yes. Don’t surround yourself with people who tell you that your pancakes are awesome, even when you put dog shit in to test them how honest they are. You need people in your life that will tell you that dog shit is dog shit.

• Is it based on something?

Not that I know of.

• Is this movie a must-see?

It’s a funny movie, but I doubt it will become a classic. It’s a must-see if you’re a “Lonely Island” fan.

You can try with some other mockumentaries, such as: “What We Do in the Shadows”, “This is Spinal Tap”, “Drop Dead Gorgeous”, Borat , and Brüno.

Judgment time!

“Popstar” is one of those silly comedies with straightforward jokes that make you laugh. Sometimes because they are funny and sometimes because they are so stupid, they’re funny. Either way is good for me. Laughing is laughing.

The fact that “Popstar” is packed with celebrities of all kind helps as well. And when I say packed, I really mean packed. There is like 50 of them in the movie. It must be some kind of a record. They have a couple of lines and it blends really well with the rest of the movie. You really get a feeling that it’s an actual documentary.

Even though some jokes are forced, this is still a solid comedy and a must-see for “Lonely Island” fans. I give it 8/10
