The Babadook (2014): Sometimes, there really is a monster.

What is it about?

As if being a single mom isn’t enough to handle for young Amelia, her son is a tormented brat who is hard to handle. But wait, there’s more! There is also a monster included. And no good sir and/or madam, it is not only in the boy’s imagination.

Will the single mom power through this obstacle? Will her son ever have a normal life or is he going to have to find a really good job to be able to afford three sessions a week with a licensed therapist with access to powerful drugs? What kind of a name is Babadook?

Who should watch it?

  • Should I watch it with my kid(s)?

No! Bad parent! Your kid will never sleep again. And guess what that means? Neither will you.

  • Is it good to watch on a date?

Only if you are both into horror movies.

  • For what age and gender is it intended?

Anyone above 16 could find this movie interesting.

What can I expect from this movie?

  • Will I get scared?

For me, it was so-so. It’s not the scariest movie you will ever see, but it does have a spooky atmosphere and a couple of scenes that will elevate your heartbeat.

  • Will I fall off the couch laughing and have sore abs the next day due to laughing too hard?

  • Is my brain going to implode trying to figure out the movie?

No. It’s rather easy to follow.

  • Will I learn anything from this movie?

Yeah. Don’t read creepy books. Seriously. Oh, and sometimes, kids are right about the monster in the dark. Who knew?

  • Is it based on something?

Not that I know of.

It’s one of the better horror movies in the last several years, but I wouldn’t call it a must-see movie unless you are a real horror fan.

Similar movies like “The Babadook”?

If you are looking for similar movies, you might want to go with The Others or Insidious 1, 2, 3.

Judgment time!

This is one of the best horror movies in 2014 and as such, it should be watched by anyone who likes quality horror movies. It’s not the scariest movies out there but it’s very well made and will more than satisfy your hunger for horror. I give it an 8/10
